The Process:

These auditions are first-come, first-served.  Upon arrival you will be booked into the system and given an audition time within a two-hour block.  With a large turnout it is possible that you will be able to leave, and then return when your booked two-hour time block begins. Within that two-hour block you will be asked to sing a musical theatre song of your choice. You may be asked to sing a second selection you have prepared. After your singing audition, you may be asked to participate in a group dance audition.

You may be asked, either then or in a later communication, to the ‘Joseph’ callback auditions being held March 27 – April 1st or to the ‘Singin’ In The Rain’ callback auditions March 27 – 31st. If you haven’t been called back and have not heard from us by April 15, we thank you for auditioning but you have not been selected. We hope you will come see the shows!

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is Theatre Under the Stars?

Theatre Under the Stars is a non-profit society whose mandate is to entertain families through popular musical theatre and to provide vibrant opportunities for developing theatre artists. TUTS values an atmosphere of inclusion and mentorship in order to build strong character and to promote positive values.

Theatre Under the Stars has presented 63 seasons of musical theatre at its outdoor venue in Stanley Park. It is a time-honoured tradition for thousands of Lower Mainland families as well as attracting visitors from around the world. Last season’s attendance was over 30,000 patrons.

Will I have to come to both open call audition days?

No, unless when you arrive we are already full for the day.

When are callbacks?

‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ callbacks will be March 27- April 1st.  ‘Singin In The Rain’ callbacks will be March 27-31st. This is subject to change.

What ages of children are you looking for?

Children ages 8-14 yrs for ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’  who are proficient in both singing and dance and have some dance, gymnastic and/or musical theatre experience. ‘Singin’ In The Rain’ has 4 roles ages 8-12.

Are there scenes to prepare for auditions?

No. If you are called back, you will be given a scene to read and a song from the show to prepare.

Can I book a time in advance for open call auditions?

No, open call auditions are on a first come, first served basis.   Union performers must email a resume to auditions@tuts.ca  to request an audition (see more info above under CAEA).

Should I prepare a monologue?

No. You will only be required to sing and dance.

Do all parts require singing and dancing?

Generally, yes.

Will you accept video or DVD auditions?

No, except in exceptional circumstances - usually related to those who may be out of town for work or attending University. The reality is that it is difficult for the directors to properly judge a performer’s ability or suitability based on a video audition. It is infinitely preferable to audition in person.

Do I have to bring sheet music?

Yes, in your key.

What if I don’t have sheet music?

You probably shouldn't come.

What if I am not available on the open call audition dates?

If you cannot come on any of the open call audition days listed above and you are not a member of Canadian Actors Equity Association (or UBCP or ACTRA), you will be unable to audition for the 2010 season at TUTS.

Can I bring my own pianist?

No. Everyone must audition using our exceptionally experienced audition pianist.

I don’t have character shoes - can I still audition?

Absolutely, but bring or wear some shoes that you can dance in. The singing audition will usually be first and you will have time to change into dancewear following that audition.

I don’t have a professional headshot is that okay?

Absolutely. We will take a photo of you to remind us of who you are. A professionally done photo of you is purely an option although for leading roles it is advantageous.

What should be on my resume?

Your name, contact information, theatrical experience and any training you have and where you received your training.

What should I wear?

Wear what you feel you look good in for your singing audition and bring something to wear for the dance audition. Please have your hair tied back so we can see your face. No oversized dancewear please.

Are there any paid positions?

Theatre Under the Stars may hire up to four Equity artists on a Guest Artist Contract for lead roles.

Are all cast members in both shows?

No. Each show has its own cast.

How much time will I have to spend at the auditions?

It depends on how busy we are. Once you register, you will be given a time to return. Upon return you will be required to stay approximately 2 hours.

When are next year’s auditions?

Next year our auditions are tentatively scheduled for Feb 5 - 13, 2011.
