Bye Bye Birdie marks the return of rock and roll to Malkin Bowl. Written by Michael Stewart, with music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Lee Adams, this satirical musical is set in 1960 in Sweet Apple, Ohio. The story follows Conrad Birdie – a thinly disguised Elvis Presley teen heartthrob who attracts the admiration of teenagers across North America. When Birdie is drafted into the army, his agent and songwriter plans a farewell performance on The Ed Sullivan Show in which one lucky fan receives a kiss from Birdie. Hilarity ensues when jealousy and mishaps take centre stage.

“Last year, audiences and critics raved about our version of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” says James Cronk, producer of Theatre Under the Stars. “We were determined to bring a show to Malkin Bowl with those same great qualities – family fun, rock and roll and loads of comedy.”

Anything Goes is renowned for its collection of Cole Porter hits. Written by P.G. Wodehouse, Guy Bolton, Russell Crouse and Howard Lindsay, the musical takes place on the S.S. American. Sailing from New York to London, the story features the antics of an unusual group of passengers including a wealthy debutante and her mother, a stowaway and a gangster.

“We are thrilled to be bringing Anything Goes back to Malkin Bowl, last performed here in 1987,” says Cronk. “Anything Goes is the perfect partner for Bye Bye Birdie with its style, hilarious high jinks and superb score. With these two memorable musicals, I believe this may be our funniest and most fun season in years – something you won’t want to miss out on.”
