FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) ABOUT TUTS AUDITIONS:
What is Theatre Under the Stars?

Theatre Under the Stars is a non-profit society whose mandate is to entertain families through popular musical theatre and to provide vibrant opportunities for developing theatre artists. TUTS values an atmosphere of inclusion and mentorship in order to build strong character and to promote positive values. Theatre Under the Stars has presented 67 seasons of musical theatre at its outdoor venue in Stanley Park. It is a time-honored tradition for thousands of Lower Mainland families as well as attracting visitors from around the world. Average attendance each season is close to 35,000 patrons.

What ages of children are you looking for?
This depends on the shows that are chosen, and will change from year to year. In 2014, SHREK has limited roles for young people under the age of 16 years of age. We will only be considering those young performers who have a background in theatre and who have had dancing and singing lessons.

Are there scenes or songs to prepare for auditions?
No. If you are called back, you will be given a scene to read and a song from the show to prepare.

Can I book a time in advance for open call auditions?
YES. See the link above.

Should I prepare a monologue?
No. You will only be required to sing and dance.

Do all parts require singing and dancing?
Generally, yes.

Will you accept video or DVD auditions?
Generally no, except in exceptional circumstances - usually related to those who may be out of town for work or attending school. The reality is that it is difficult for the directors to properly judge a performer’s ability or suitability based on a video audition. It is infinitely preferable to audition in person. IF you are unable to attend the auditions in person and wish to submit a video audition, please email your request with details explaining your request to: tuts.auditions@gmail.com

Do I have to bring sheet music?
Yes, in your key.

What if I am not available on the open call audition dates?
If you cannot come on any of the open call audition days listed above and you are not a member of Canadian Actors Equity Association (or UBCP or ACTRA), you will be unable to audition for the 2014 season at TUTS.

Can I bring my own pianist?
No. Everyone must audition using our exceptionally experienced audition pianist.

I don’t have character shoes - can I still audition?
Absolutely, but bring or wear some shoes that you can dance in. The singing audition will usually be first and you will have time to change into dancewear following that audition.

I don’t have a professional headshot. Is that okay?
Absolutely. We will take a photo of you to remind us of who you are. A professionally done photo of you is an excellent option but certainly not required.

What should be on my resume?
Your name, contact information, previous theatrical experience, and any training you have (including where you received this training and names of your teachers/coaches where applicable)

What should I wear?
Wear what you feel you look good in for your singing audition, and bring something to change into for the dance audition. Please have your hair tied back so we can see your face. No oversized dancewear please.

Are there any paid positions?
Theatre Under the Stars may hire up to two Equity artists on a Guest Artist Contract for lead roles.

Are all cast members in both shows?
No. Each show has its own cast.

How much time will I have to spend at the auditions?
Approximately 2 hours.
