Theatre Under the Stars Company Awards

Aida Broadbent (1908-2000) was the primary choreographer for Theatre Under the Stars for over twenty years. In the 1940’s she worked in Hollywood choreographing films starring Bing Crosby, Susan Heyward, Ray Bolger and Desi Arnez. She also choreographerd at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and on Broadway. But her real love was working at Theatre Under the Stars where her commitment to excellence was a pillar for the company.

The Aida Broadbent Award is given to non-professional actors, from either company, whose conduct and performance was of an exemplary professional standard.

Ernest Vanderpoel Young (1879-1955) became involved in amateur dramatic work at London’s St. James’ Theatre. Following his move to Cnaada, he sparked formation of the Vancouver Little Theatre Association, for which he produced and acted with for 10 yeras. In 1936, Young produced Vancouver’s first outdoor theatre production, which led to the establishment of Theatre Under the Stars in 1940. Ernest Young was the artistic director and stage manager, and worked as an actor for TUTS for 15 years. Young also contributed to the UBC Musical Society’s annual productions and advised the University’s Player’s Club. The E.V. Young Award recognizes non-professional actors, from either company, whose performance is outstanding and in the best tradition of Theatre Under the Stars.
