Spend the Summer in Stanley Park!

Theatre Under the Stars Musical Society (TUTS) is not for profit society with a mandate to entertain families through popular musical theatre shows, while providing a vibrant outlet and training ground to develop amateur performers and technicians both young and old. TUTS achieves this through a unique collaboration between professionals and volunteers working together in administration, performance, production, and venue operations. TUTS values an atmosphere of inclusion and mentorship in order to build strong character and to promote positive values. Presented at Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park, Vancouverites have long considered TUTS a summer cultural tradition with average attendance of approximately 40,000 patrons per year.

The 2023 Summer Season at Theatre Under the Stars brings back the tradition of open-air musical theatre with the productions of The Prom and Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical, running in repertory from July 6th to August 26th.

Theatre Under the Stars is now accepting applications for the following positions. Our Production Team is focussed on providing valuable and fun experiences. These positions are excellent opportunities to generate professional contacts in Vancouver’s theatre industry, expand one’s technical knowledge and experience, and enjoy a wonderful summer of fun!

Follow Spot Operator

Follow Spot Operator

Position Overview:
Theatre Under the Stars is looking for enthusiastic and committed volunteers to be Follow Spot Operators for our 2023 season. Working under the direction of a professional Lighting Designer and Lead Follow Spot Operator throughout the tech process and under a professional Stage Manager throughout the run of the show, a Follow Spot Operator contributes directly to the patron experience by ensuring that key moments in our productions are properly lit. This position is an excellent opportunity to generate professional contacts in Vancouver’s theatre industry, expand one’s technical knowledge and experience, and enjoy a wonderful summer of fun under the stars in beautiful Stanley Park. No experience is necessary, however an ideal candidate must be comfortable with heights.

Responsibilities:
The key responsibilities are:

  • Responsible for operating the “follow-spot light” during rehearsals and performances
  • Arrive prior to the performance to assist with the stage change over from one show to another
  • Work closely with the Lighting Designer and Stage Manager to ensure proper execution of lighting cues

Qualifications:

  • Must be available for tech period – June 17th to July 5th, 2023
    • Exact schedule and days varies with show
  • Must be available for performances July 6th to Aug 26th, 2023
      • Option for job sharing the position exists.
  • Must be able to climb stairs up to 3 stories in height
  • Ability to move lift and move sets up to 30lbs.

Remuneration:
This is a volunteer-based position, however there will be a pro-rated Expense Offset Payment offered.

Wardrobe Crew Dresser

Wardrobe Crew Dresser

Position Overview:
Theatre Under the Stars is looking for enthusiastic and committed volunteers to be Wardrobe Crew Dressers for our upcoming 2023 season. Working under the direction of a professional Costume Designer throughout the tech process and under a professional Head of Wardrobe, a Wardrobe Crew Dresser will be assigned to the full run of one of the two productions. They will be required to be in attendance for each performance of the assigned show as well as all tech rehearsals. This position is an excellent opportunity to generate professional contacts in Vancouver’s theatre industry, expand one’s technical knowledge and experience, and enjoy a wonderful summer of fun under the stars in beautiful Stanley Park. No experience is necessary, however basic sewing skills are an asset.

Responsibilities:

  • Pre-setting costumes for the start of the show
  • Inventorying and returning costumes
  • Laundering costumes
  • Light costume repairs
  • Assisting with quick changes and movement of costumes

 Qualifications:

  • Must be available for tech period – June 17th to July 5th, 2023
    • Exact schedule and days varies with show
  • Must be available for performances July 6th to Aug 26th, 2023
    • Shows run every second night.
  • Strong interpersonal communication an asset.

Remuneration:
This is a volunteer-based position, however there will be a pro-rated Expense Offset Payment offered.
