ABOUT THE SHOW
Based on the famous novel by Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory features an original score composed by Marc Shaiman with lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray) and a book by David Greig. The score also pays homage to the Leslie Bricusse/Anthony Newley score from the 1971 film with songs from the motion picture including “Candy Man,” “I’ve Got a Golden Ticket,” “Oompa Loompa Song,” and “Pure Imagination.”
The world-famous Willy Wonka is opening the gates to his mysterious factory…but only to a lucky few. Young Charlie Bucket and four other golden ticket winners will embark on a life-changing journey through Wonka’s world of pure imagination including chocolate waterfalls, nutty squirrels and the great glass elevator, all to be revealed by Wonka’s army of curious Oompa-Loompas.
DANCE CALL vs SINGING CALL
Sign up for our dance call if:
– you are a person under 5′ in height
– you love to dance
– singing isn’t necessarily your thing
– the idea of being an Oompa-Loompa for a summer excites you
Sign up for a singing call if:
– you are any height
– you love to sing and act
– you can dance…or can’t dance…or anywhere in between
– you’d like to be considered for a part other than an Oompa-Loompa
You will not be required to attend the dance call unless you are interested in being an Oompa-Loompa (non singing role, under 5′ tall), or you are auditioning for a singing role but would like to be considered for an Oompa-Loompa as well.
NOTE FROM CREATIVE TEAM
In the spirit of Pure Imagination, the Creative Team is keeping a broad, open-mind to casting. While the characters in the piece are defined in terms of age, gender and vocal range – we will consider any artist for any role regardless of age, gender, appearance, ability or…er…height (almost).
CAST REQUIREMENTS
Genders listed are ‘characterizations’ for individual roles, but Creative Teams will consider casting performers of all genders for all roles.
Willy Wonka
Of indeterminate age. Sly, charming and eccentric. His larger than life persona can go from charming and comical, to magically mysterious and dark.
Gender: Male
Bari-tenor
Vocal range top: G4
Vocal range bottom: A2
Charlie Bucket
Aged 11-12 years. Sweet, imaginative, hopeful and kind. A boy with a “touch of odd”. Charlie will need a good strong singing voice and playful, earnest spirit.
Gender: Male
Vocal range top: F5
Vocal range bottom: G#3
Grandpa Joe
Soon to turn 90 and 1/2. Impish. Charlie’s paternal grandfather. He tells extremely tall-tales that ignite Charlie’s imagination. He has a vaudevillian charm. Movement/dance ability is a plus.
Gender: Male
Baritone
Vocal range top: G4
Vocal range bottom: G#2
Mrs. Bucket (Might also play Mrs. Green)
Late 20’s to early 40’s. Charlie’s warm and kind-hearted mother struggling to keep the family warm and fed.
Gender: Female
Alto
Vocal range top: E5
Vocal range bottom: G3
Grandma Josephine (Will also play ensemble roles)
Octogenarian. Joe’s wife. Charlie’s paternal grandmother. Positive and loving, tries to keep Grandpa Joe in line. Will likely be played by an actor in half-mask – so experience with mask-work is a plus.
Gender: Female
Vocal range top: D5
Vocal range bottom: C4
Grandma Georgina (Will also play ensemble roles)
Ancient. At times a bit batty…and gaseous. Often speaks in non-sequiturs. Will likely be played by an actor in half-mask – so experience with mask-work is a plus.
Gender: Female
Vocal range top: E5
Vocal range bottom: Ab3
Grandpa George (Will also play ensemble roles)
The most ancient. Grumpy and irritable most of the time. Will likely be played by an actor in half-mask – so experience with mask-work is a plus.
Gender Male
Vocal range top: E4
Vocal range bottom: F2
Mrs. Gloop (Will also play ensemble roles)
Late 20’s to early 40’s. Augustus’s oblivious, doting, Bavarian mother. Buries the horror she feels about her child behind a facade of forced elation.
Gender: Female
Vocal range top: D5
Vocal range bottom: Bb3
Agustus Gloop
Aged 12-14. A greedy, gluttonous, boastful monster, hungrily consuming anything within reach.
Gender: Male
Vocal range top: G5
Vocal range bottom: Bb3
Mr. Salt (Will also play ensemble roles)
Aged mid 30’s to late 40’s. Veruca’s grotesquely wealthy, doting father. He finds it impossible to say no, giving in to every ridiculous demand his daughter makes. Obsessed with wealth and prestige.
Gender: Male
Baritone
Vocal range top: Ab4 (falsetto)
Vocal range bottom: Ab2
Veruca Salt (Might also play ensemble roles)
Could be 11-16 years old. A viciously selfish monster. The universe revolves around her. She considers herself to be the best in the world at everything…especially ballet (which may be debatable). Veruca should be great at shrieking and have some dance background.
Gender: Female
Vocal range top: Db5
Vocal range bottom: Ab4
Mr. Beauregarde
Late 20’s to mid 30’s. Violet’s exploitative father. He is more interested in promoting and making money off his daughter than caring for her. A salesman (in the worst way) who thinks he is pretty fly – in a 1980’s hip-hop culture kind of way.
Gender: Male
Vocal range top: G4
Vocal range bottom: F#3
Violet Beauregarde
Around 12-13 years old. A prideful, sassy, competitive monster. Live-streams her life over social-media in search of constant attention and validation. Sings with a big, pop-R’n’B voice. Dance ability a plus.
Gender: Female
Vocal range top: F#5
Vocal range bottom: C#4
Mike Teavee
Around 11 years old. Hyperactive, aggressive, obsessive monster. He may as well be plugged into the Matrix, living in a digital world of online first-person-shooter games, YouTube videos, and Virtual Reality. Mike needs to be physically adept – not necessarily a dancer, but someone who can move in strong, clear ways. Dance, Martial Arts, or Circus training would be an asset.
Gender: Male
Vocal range top: Bb4
Vocal range bottom: G3
Mrs. Teavee (May also play ensemble roles)
Late 20’s. She is hyper-concerned about projecting an image of the perfect 1950’s mother. While appearing perfectly put-together, she needs valium to deal with her outrageous son. Soft-spoken but extremely tense all the time.
Gender: Female
Vocal range top: Eb5
Vocal range bottom: G3
Mrs. Green (Will also play ensemble roles)
A “small business person” who sells old produce on the street. Pushy and loud and always looking for an extra buck.
Jerry Jubilee (Will also play ensemble roles and may also play Mrs. Green)
A mainstream media anchor-person. Dry. Emotionless. About as interesting as cardboard.
Cherry Sundae (Will also play ensemble roles, and may also play Mrs. Green)
A Fox-News-esque field reporter. A bit of a dope, who is looking for click-bait headlines.
ENSEMBLE
Roles include: Chocolate Lovers, City Dwellers, Bavarians, Gum Chompin’ Divas, a Bodyguard, Photographers, Reporters
Oompa-Loompas
Wonka’s mysterious, mischievous, eccentric work-force. Small people with a giant sense of play. They LOVE to dance. We are looking for strong dancers/movers. Singing ability is not a requirement. We will only consider performers under 5′ tall for Oompas.
